The Kunzru Library
When Seva Mandir was founded by Dr Mohan Singh Mehta, he also dreamt of creating a good library. He intended it to be used by staff to continue their education in the social sciences and community development, to feed the libraries and reading rooms of the villages served by Seva Mandir, and to become a centre for continuing education for the general public. The library was inaugurated on 7 October, 1973 and named after the man who was a mentor to Dr Mehta, Hridaynath Kunzru.
Since then the library has grown dramatically. There are currently more than 10,000 books in the collection as well as many more journals and magazines. Besides serving Seva Mandir's staff and volunteers, membership is open to the public and over 100 visitors use the library every day. The library is one of the few public spaces in Udaipur city where ordinary people can pursue serious intellectual self-advancement, and people from all walks of life use the building, ranging from students preparing for government exams, to elderly people reading the newspaper, school children reading comics, and teachers referring to development literature.
