UDAAN, meaning "The Flight" is an annual weeklong sports and cultural festival for adolescents and youth in Delwara (approx. 26 kilometers from Udaipur city). Jointly organized by Seva Mandir and Nagrik Vikas Manch , the festival encourages young people from the community to participate in locally played sports and cultural activities.
Two months ago, Kavya, a 12-year-old, asked her father "Can I ever play like Jhulan Goswami ?"
Moved by her daughter's question, Dinesh Soni started training her daughter and some of her friends every morning. The team grew really fast, and 40 girls started training for three hours every day. Morning breakfast, exercise and cricket- that's what Kavya and her friends look forward to everyday !
During the lock down and subsequently school closure, spaces for young girls have shrunken drastically. The novel coronavirus further deepened the inequalities and exposed the existing vulnerabilities of our social systems.
This year, UDAAN kickstarted on 21st February with junior girl's cricket match and girls are thrilled to be competing with each other. The event will conclude on 27th February with cultural performance.
Delwara Tehsildaar Hukum Kunwar and sarpanch Mangilal Katariya congratulated the participants "It's nice to see after Covid- 19 lockdown and closure of schools , girls have got a chance and a platform to interact with each other and showcase their talent. I want to congratulate Seva mandir and Nagrik vikas manch for their great efforts"
