Development & Trsuteeship: The
Reflection Retreat 19th - 20th February 2010:
The retreat
focused on the theme “Development & Trusteeship.”
Leaders from around the nation, academics, development professionals,
donors, NGO professionals and journalists participated in two
days of discussion around the idea of applying Ghandi's philosophy
of 'Trusteeship' to development work. Rooted in a protection of
human dignity, 'Trusteeship' is a philosophy that aims to liberate
modern economic philosophy from the crisis of materialism, bringing
it to a higher spiritual plane. In Trusteeship, human actions
are motivated by social objectives of the protection of human
rights.
With a concentrated
focus on ‘constructive work,’ Seva Mandir has worked
for 40 years to bring communities together to collectively initiate
projects for the ‘common good.’ This work has created
leadership roles within communities, empowering people to act
as trustees of development within their community. In the same
vain, through this highly interactive Reflection Retreat, Seva
Mandir created a shared platform for development leaders to explore
our common understanding of how this philosophy does and should
apply to our work....more

Rural
Tribal Children in Schools: story of Chanavada NFE- by
Joe McKnight
In
the Dagal hamlet of Chanavda Village, the Seva Mandir sponsored
education
center started in 2005 is bustling with activity. Within the newly
renovated
concrete walls and stone thatched roof sit fifty eight children
aged six through twelve with their teachers Devilal and Indra.
Only a few years ago, many
of these children would have been taking cattle out to graze rather
than working on addition or subtraction. The education center
was started to alleviate the problems left unaddressed by local
government schools. For the children in Chanavda village, the
two kilometre walk to an overcrowded and understaffed school which
couldn’t provide proper stationary materials wasn’t
worth the effort....full

Children
and mother get vaccinated: story of Jaruli
Jaruli devi stays in the remote Kaucha village
of Kotra block. Her village is very far from the district health
center and the local health facilities have much higher than normal
rates of worker absenteeism, making access to health care very challenging.
Jaruli was in her third pregnancy. In her prior pregnancies, she
never got TT immunization, as the government immunization services
were not regular in the village. Both the two deliveries were institutional
deliveries, but the babies did not survive. During her third pregnancy,
she got her antenatal check ups and both the TT shots as Seva Mandir
had started an immunization camp in her village. The GNM (General
Nurse Midwife) counseled her on nutrition and care during pregnancy,
and also encouraged her to take iron folic acid (IFA) tablets, as
she was anemic. The GNM continued to check up on her health each
month when she visited the village for camp. Jaruli had a safe delivery
and, this time, her child survived. Full
